New Acquisition: Players of Colour by Lawrence Lemaoana

In the fabric-work Players of Colour Lawrence Lemaoana uses materials and working methods associated with femininity to depict a sports-team. The irony of representing the macho-men of the South African sports-world through pink and floral fabrics, using the traditionally feminine craft of quilting, allows him to wittily question stereotypical understandings of masculinity. The title of the artwork, Players of Colour, points to racial quotas in sports. Lemaoana’s players are all faceless, suggesting that their personalities or abilities count less than their status as figureheads. Lemaoana, a young black man, used to play rugby and in 2000 participated in the Craven Week rugby tournament.
