Adult Drawing Classes
A series of drawing classes is offered each quarter by Stanley Cohen and Van Zyl la Grange, two experienced teachers who introduce participants to the rich language of drawing through the practical exploration of diverse techniques and various media. Opportunity is provided for the development of each participant's individual style and competency in a relaxed, non-competitive manner, thereby developing an appreciation of drawing and its expressive potential.

Friday 6, 13, 20, 27 November
10:00 - 12:00 or 14:30 - 16:30
These classes fill up fast, and only 16 participants are accepted in each class, so book early to avoid disappointment! The fee is R150, excluding materials, but these requirements are simple and a list is provided at the first class. Bookings tel: 788 4106.
Livable and Lovable Cities
Middle America
Wednesday 28 October 10:30 - 12:30
Many city images of the United States of America originate on the East Coast (Madison Avenue) or the newer West Coast (Hollywood). We now explore that vast area in between and known as Middle America, with cities like Cinncinnati, Indianapolis or Minneapolis. Besides railways, meat packers and lake steamers, Chicago has given us architects like Frank Lloyd Wright, Mies van der Rohe and Helmut Jahn. We also touch on the Rockies at Boulder, Colorado.
The Deep South
Wednesday 25 November 10:30 - 12:30
What are Spanish Moss, the Dogwood or Roadrunners? In this lecture we explode stereotypes and cast our net further south-west into Texas. We then move on to graceful New Orleans, visit a "cookout" in Charleston, and drop in on the host city of the 1996 Olympics, Atlanta. Finally we discover that San Antonio's Riverwalk is a dream in the shadow of the Alamo, while the cowboys on the freeways around the twin Dallas-Fort Worth can drive one to distraction.
Professor Wallace van Zyl concludes this year's lectures with a look at cities and settlements in two broad regions of North America.
Admission is R25, and includes Mrs Watkins' delicious teas. All Welcome.

Women's Writing Workshops
Narrathon - a narrative marathon for women writers
Saturday 17 October 14:00 - 16.30 (introduction)
Saturday 24 & Sunday 25 October 9:30 - 16:30
The group will develop the elements of narrative, write a story from these and learn a 'reusable' way of writing stories. The narrathon introduces participants to narrative theory and story construction, and then explores this through a series of short, closely structured sessions and exercises.
It uses games, drawing, freewriting and other lively and fun techniques to create a non-threatening, playful and spontaneous space for writing. Beginner writers welcome!
Participants are asked to bring a small box or tin with lid, a pen and notebook, a piece of writing or book by an author whose writing you admire and a 5 minute tape of a piece of music you love (preferably without lyrics).
Anne Schuster is a published writer, and creative writing facilitator with many years' experience in running workshops for individuals and organisations. She recently completed a MPhil in Language and Literature Education where her research focused on approaches to teaching writing, especially to women.
Fee: R150 (full bursary available, please apply to Anne Schuster at 4617804 or 7881766)
