LAWRENCE FREDERICK MONAGHAN: PHOTOGRAPHER
closes 19 May

Monaghan was born in Port Elizabeth on 25 April 1879 and spent most of his life in this area. He studied to become an accountant, and in 1901 joined the firm Marshall & Co. (later Garlicks) of which he later became a partner. He was married to Ida Kerkhoff in 1915.
Monaghan's photography is a testament to the artists' personal involvement with, as well as a social document of the period between 1910 and 1930. He died in 1973.
A few years later, during the demolition of old South End in Port Elizabeth, a few moth-eaten cardboard boxes containg neatly packed glass-plate negatives were accidentally found in an abandoned building. The negatives were later sold to an antique dealer where they were discovered by Ivor Markman. In 1981 the SANG purchased 27 large black and white prints made from the original glass-plate negatives, of which some two hundred have survived.

The photographs on this exhibition are silver prints made by Ivor Markman from the original glass-plate negatives.

RUTH PROWSE
opens 8 June

Born within a year of each other, these two remarkably sensitive painters devoted their lives to art. Apart from the fact that they were close friends for many years, there are several interesting similarities in their careers and in the work they produced. Both were founder members of the New Group, both were curators of the Michaelis Collection at the Old Town House, both taught art for many years. Both painted portraits, landscapes and still lifes, and both worked prolifically and exhibited frequently. However less is generally known of the life of Florence Zerffi possibly because of the huge reputation of her short-lived husband, Harry Stratford Caldecott.

This exhibition is drawn from the SANG permanent holdings as well as from private collections in and around the Peninsula.

WORKSHOPS
"Yours sincerely the lost art of letter writing"

Friday 10 and Saturday 11 May 10:00 - 15:30

This experiential workshop considers the creative art of letter writing - the joy of writing and receiving letters. We spend time examining the way we write personal letters, compose seasonal circulars and pen letters to the Press. The course concentrates on creativity, voice and audience. We produce our letter texts in a supportive group and safe learning environment.
The course also considers some famous correspondents such as John Keats and Virginia Woolf. During the two days we address a number of questions. Why do some seasonal circulars involve us while others send us to sleep? How is letter writing affected by the age we live in? How does the computer and email affect the way we write our letters?
Dorian Haarhoff, the facilitator, is a Namibian academic, writer and teacher.
Course fee: R120 (R100 for FONGS)

"Vision and Intellect"
Saturday 22 June 14:00-16:30

In this workshop, using the Bates method of visual development and Gail Dennison's Vision Circles we discover the link between sight, vision and metaphor, ie., our capacity for art appreciation. The facillitator is Anca Groenewoud who has practised as a clinical psychologist for 15 years and is trained in educational kinesthetics (a method of sensory integration through movement).
Participants should dress in warm casual clothing and bring a cushion (for sitting on) and pencil/wax crayons.
Fee: R20 (includes tea). To book please tel. 788-4106.

"The Mermaid from Zanzibar"
The place is Zanzibar, the year is 1873, and the slave trade has just been outlawed. Off the spring-board of solid research, leap characters real and fantastical: the heroine is an African mermaid and her friends include singing whales and a one-octopus band, and even some young humans. When she has to fight for her freedom, her friends from land and sea unite to help her.
Being one of Pedro's shows, it follows that it is a celebration of world music, accessible to all. Instruments are fashioned out of sea-weed, shells and drift-wood, and even fishing-rods and ship-wrecked treasure are used to make magical sounds.
Audience participation is extensive.
Children aged 4 to 9 absolutely adore him, so book early as we are always bursting at the seams when Pedro comes to play.
Entry: R7. Bookings tel. 788-4106.
