MAIN BUILDING - SOME CURRENT exhibitions

Contemporary South African Art 1985-1995: from the SANG Permanent Collection
Liberman, Rooms 10, 9, 8 and 7 from 14 December

sng.jpg 25.3 K
Angela Ferreira, Sites and Services I (1990), pastel.

This exhibition showcases contemporary South African art produced during the last decade and acquired by the South African National Gallery between 1985 and 1995. More than 600 paintings, sculptures, works on paper, photographs, videos, baskets, bead works and ceramic pieces will be included. The exhibition is accompanied by a well-illustrated catalogue and can be found on the Internet at http://www.gem.co.za/sang, making it accessible to both local and international audiences.

The exhibition will provide a comprehensive overview of recent art production in South Africa. Visitors will also be able to assess the extent to which political and cultural changes in our country are reflected in the visual arts as well as in the collecting policies and practices of the National Gallery over the last decade.

The project gained impetus when the Director of the South African National Gallery attended the 7th PREMA (Prevention in Museums in Africa) Directors' Seminar in Accra, Ghana in December 1995. As part of the seminar, participants were required to prepare and present a project for collaborative implementation with ICCROM (Inter-national Centre for the Study of Preservation and Restoration of Cultural Property). The project, to be completed by December 1996, has to focus on one or both of the following aspects of museum work: documentation and exhibition. ICCROM contributes $2 500 towards the project, provided that at least that amount is raised by the institution concerned.

The SANG budgeted for the research component and a contribution to the catalogue, while substantial sponsorship for the catalogue has been received from the Swiss Agency for Development and Co-operation. The Internet component has been generously provided by Global Electronic Messaging (http://www. gem.co.za). We are grateful for this support and the opportunity of focussing on a specific part of the Gallery holdings.

A catalogue is available in the Gallery Shop.

Cecil Skotnes Retrospektief
Libermansaal, Kamers 4 en 5, 3 Oktober tot 24 November

untitled.jpg 20.2 K
Cecil Skotnes, detail from Untitled (1979).
