The excursion to Donkergat will start at a mystery gate at the end of the main road through Postberg just before the turn-off to the Vingerklippe Uitkyk – a viewing sight known to many. Friends who go on this excursion will be privileged as this area falls under the jurisdiction of the South African National Defense Force, and is thus not accessible to the general public. A member of the Defense Force and a South African National Parks honorary ranger familiar with the area will accompany Friends. The Defense Force representative will talk about the historical sites, whilst the honorary ranger will discuss the fauna and the flora particular to this area.

Donkergat was first home to a whaling station from 1909. Before being closed down in 1967 more than 40 000 whales were slaughtered. A meteorological site was also established in 1942, operated by the military.
