The remarkably preserved manuscripts and artefacts which form the ‘Timbuktu Script and Scholarship’ exhibition at the Castle of Good Hope, offer visitors insight into the sophisticated cultural history of sub-Saharan Africa dating back to the 1100s. Symposium: Dutch Museum partners with National Museum of Mali 28/07/2008
An event not to be missed takes place at the TH Barry Lecture Theatre, Iziko South African Museum, on Wednesday 30 July from 12:45-14:15. Luminaries from the Rijks Museum voor Volkenkunde Leiden in Holland, Director Dr Steven Englesman, and Archaeologist and Conservator of its African Section, Dr Annette Schmidt, conduct a seminar entitled “The Inclusive Museums Experience of the Volkenkunde Museum Leiden and its partnership with the National Museum of Mali”. more>>

Exhibition: Timbuktu Script & Scholarship. Touring to six South African cities between 8 August and 1 December 2008 22/07/2008
Timbuktu Script & Scholarship is an exhibition of about 40 manuscripts from the holdings of the Ahmed Baba Institute (IHERI-AB) in Timbuktu, Mali. Some of these manuscripts are hundreds of years old, and were written in a variety of styles of Arabic calligraphy by scholars and copyists who were part of an African Islamic intellectual tradition centred in Timbuktu. Some of the manuscripts are beautifully decorated with gold illumination and kept in finely tooled leather covers. more>>

Minister of Arts & Culture, Dr Z. Pallo Jordan to host the Timbuktu Manuscript and Scholarship Exhibition 22/07/2008
The Minister of Arts & Culture, Dr. Z. Pallo Jordan will host the launch of the Timbuktu script and scholarship exhibition at the Castle of Good Hope in Cape Town on the 7th August 2008. The President Thabo Mbeki will deliver a keynote address at the event. more>>
