Commemorative Days
Iziko is committed to making its museums accessible to all South Africans. Our museums are open free of charge to everyone on special days of the year. In August and September Iziko Museums invite you and your families to celebrate the following commemorative days with us:

National Women’s Day – 9 August

Heritage Week – 22 to 28 September

Iziko marks most commemorative public holidays with public programmes and activities. The 2008 commemorative programmes will focus on:

National Women’s Day

Public lecture: 7 August

Public lecture at the Iziko South African Museum to commemorate National Women’s Day, celebrated on 09 August.

National Women’s Day – 9 August

Of particular relevance to Women’s Day is the Iziko Slave Lodge exhibition, ‘Celebrating Women’ – which highlights the role of women in the struggle against Apartheid.

Heritage Week & Heritage Month

Heritage Month: 1–30 September

A multi-faceted programme of film screenings, public lectures, behind-the-scenes tours, Bo-Kaap excursions and school activities form part of the heritage month programme.

Heritage Week – 22 to 28 September

Iziko celebrates Heritage Week and the museums are free to all for 7 days. This is an important time for South Africans to reflect on cultural heritage and on our diversity of beliefs and traditions, within the context of a national culture. Iziko will run special educational programmes during Heritage Week.
