South African Museum

Through hands-on encounters with specimens and objects such as skulls, skeletons, fossils, mounted birds, insects and reptiles learners are encouraged to analyse, investigate and discover the natural world around them. Learners can listen to whale songs and touch huge whale bones. The South African Museum also offers lessons based on a large collection of indigenous cultural material that aims to encourage an appreciation and understanding of the indigenous cultures of South Africa. Display themes include:

  • Indigenous peoples of South Africa
  • Human and Animal Senses
  • Sea life
  • African Dinosaurs and fossils
  • Birds
  • Mammals
  • Rock Art

Special behind-the-scenes tours can be arranged to visit scientists in their laboratories or collection areas. Behind the scenes tours can be arranged of palaeontology, archaeology, marine biology, entomology and taxidermy. All tours are subject to the availability of the scientists.


SA National Gallery

The Iziko South African National Gallery is a dynamic space that continually transforms as new temporary exhibitions are installed to take the place of others. General tours of the Gallery are updated to include new exhibitions. Pre-booked tours tailored to the level of learners are offered from Tuesday to Friday.
Regular teacher training, special needs and school learner workshops are offered at the SANG Annexe.


Castle of Good Hope (William Fehr Collection)

This is the oldest colonial building in South Africa. A visit to the Castle will amaze learners as they discover maps of ship routes to the East, dark dungeons, famous people who lived in the castle (including Lady Anne Barnard and King Cetshwayo), as well exhibits showing the cultural influences of the Cape.

The William Fehr Collection contains paintings and drawings from the colonial period that are rich in historical detail.


 

Slave Lodge Museum

The Slave Lodge Museum building is one of the oldest in Cape Town. The original single storey building was built in 1769. It once housed all the slaves owned by the Dutch East India Company at the Cape.

Besides hosting regular temporary travelling exhibitions, the museum has many cultural history displays, including themes and collections such as Ancient Egypt, time, money, ceramics, toys, musical instruments, weapons, etc.

A new long-term exhibition, Remembering Slavery, commemorates the experience of Cape slavery and the Indian Ocean slave trade. This exhibition is the first of many new displays that will explore the history of slavery and related themes of culture, language and human rights.


Bo-Kaap Museum

At the Bo-Kaap Museum, learners will discovery the history of Islam in the Cape. They will learn how familiar cultural practices of our Muslim community developed and gain fascinating insights into the development of the Afrikaans language and the history of Cape Town and the Bo-Kaap community. The 238-year old museum house is one of the oldest in Cape Town. Walking tours of the Bo-Kaap area can be arranged.
