The Slave Lodge Museum building is one of
the oldest in Cape Town. The original single storey building was built
in 1769. It once housed all the slaves owned by the Dutch East India
Company at the Cape.
Besides hosting regular temporary travelling exhibitions, the museum
has many cultural history displays, including themes and collections
such as Ancient Egypt, time, money, ceramics, toys, musical
instruments, weapons, etc.
A new long-term exhibition, Remembering Slavery, commemorates the
experience of Cape slavery and the Indian Ocean slave trade. This
exhibition is the first of many new displays that will explore the
history of slavery and related themes of culture, language and human
rights.
