Iziko’s main museums are all in the city of Cape Town. As most
learners and educators are from communities outside the city, it is
difficult for most schools to manage more than one visit per year to
one of our museums. For every school we see, there are twenty in the
Western Cape that do not get the opportunity.
Iziko assists schools with this problem in a
number of ways.
-
We have a community outreach officer who visits
schools, community organisations and libraries to inform them of the
exhibitions and other learning opportunities at Iziko.
-
Our fees for tours and school programmes are
very low.
-
With the support of the HCI Foundation
(formerly the Golden Arrow Foundation), we are able to provide free
transport to the most needy schools.
-
The Iziko Mobile Museum
visits schools in the Western Cape that find it difficult to
participate in our programmes.
-
Many of our public programmes are presented at
community venues.
-
A quarterly newsletter,
Edu’ndaba, is posted to Western Cape
schools.
Iziko also provides interactive displays at all
expos and programmes aimed at school learners, including Science Week,
the Youth Environmental School, the Learning Cape Festival and the
SABC Learning Faire. At these events, learners are encouraged to touch
the artefacts and specimens. For many, this will be their only
encounter ever with the bones of a whale or a five-thousand year old
stone tool.Aside from improving community access to our
museums, the other objective of our outreach programme is to
popularise
museum
careers, particularly among historically disadvantaged
learners.
