Public Lecture – Freedom Day
A lecture, entitled Commemorating 1807 – or should that be 1808?,
by Prof. Nigel Worden will officially launch Iziko’s Freedom Project.
Was abolition really the result of humanitarian concerns? And what
impact did it have on the slaves of the British colonies, especially
at the Cape?
This lecture draws attention to the mixed motives of the 1807
abolition and reviews the circumstances of Cape slaves after the
ending of the slave trade. It suggests that a more appropriate
commemoration in South Africa should be the bicentennial of the 1808
slave uprising, a genuine call for liberation which has been neglected
in our public memory.
