Bobbin lacemaking at Groot Constantia for International Museum Day
17 & 18 May 2008

The nimble-fingered ladies of the Cape Lacemaking Guild will be adding a delicate touch to the celebration of International Museum Day. On 17 and 18 May, from 10:00 until 15:00 at Groot Constantia Estate, they will be giving demonstrations of bobbin lacemaking and will also display an assortment of decorative, yet practical hand-crafted items such as wedding veils, tea-cloths, brooches, fridge magnets and bookmarks.

Bobbin lacemaking dates back to the 15th century but is alive and well thanks to its many practitioners and fans. Visitors to the event are invited to not only watch these craftspeople at work, but to also try their hand at this ancient but ever-popular craft.

Contact Wieke at Tel. 082 593 4497 for details of the event.

Biodiversity Explorer website relaunch!

It has recently undergone a major revision and this year’s International Museum Day serves as an opportunity to launch this new version. It contains over 5000 web pages and over 4000 images. There are also two large companion sites to Biodiversity Explorer, one on the wasps of Africa with over 4600 pages and 4200 images, and the other on figs and fig wasps of the world with over 1250 pages and 1400 images.
