He graduated
with a MSc in 1990 and a PhD in 1991 from the Pennsylvania State
University (USA), and after a postdoc joined UCT. He has built the Climate
System Analysis Group (CSAG) in the ENGEO department as a research group
focusing on the integrated nature of the coupled climate system, including
aspects of the social dimension, and which is now one of the largest
climate research groups in Africa with currently 16 MSc & PhD students.
Extension activities into Africa have been a key element of his
activities, including building long term partnerships with scientists
elsewhere in Africa on collaborative research. The output from his
research on regional climate projections has provided methodological
foundations for numerous other research projects internationally, and the
research products are now supporting a broad range of sectors in their
response to climate change, ranging from local and provincial scale, to
national policy and adaptation responses, as well as contributing to the
national climate change responses of neighbouring countries and serving
many adaptation research programs across Africa.
Bruce was the Coordinating Lead Author on regional climate change
projections for both of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change’s
third (2001) and fourth (2007) Assessment Reports on the Science of
Climate Change, which serve to underpin the international negotiations on
climate change response. He also serves on international committees on
climate change projections, communication for adaptation, and capacity
building in developing nations. Summer School Programme contribution
