Mohamed Shahid Mathee graduated with a degree in Shariah Studies at Al-Azhar
in Egypt in 1998. In 2004 he obtained his Masters of Social Science degree
from the University Cape Town Department of Religious Studies. His thesis
was entitled “The Living Sunnah: A critical reading of Fazlur Rahman’s
Islamic Methodology in History”. He is currently a researcher on the UCT-Timbuktu
Manuscripts Project. Mathee is also pursuing a PhD at UCT’s Department of
Historical Studies. His thesis is entitled “Fatwas as Historical Sources”.
