Venue: Royal Observatory, Observatory, and Observatory, Sutherland. Own transport.

The tour starts on Saturday morning at 8h30 at the Royal Observatory, leaving at about 10h00 for Sutherland. There will be a short lecture en route on the geology of the Karoo. A tour of the observatory at Sutherland is followed by dinner at the Sutherland Hotel and, weather permitting, a return visit to the Observatory to view the sky through the telescopes. On Sunday there is no set itinerary, but a visit to the museums in Matjiesfontein is recommended.

Sarah Baartman, a young Khoi Khoi woman, was induced in 1810 to travel to Europe, where she was exhibited as a scientific curiosity until she died in 1816. Her remains were displayed in a French museum until re-buried in South Africa in 2002.
