Bram Fischer (1908–1975) was the grandson of a Prime Minister and
the son of a Judge President, yet he threw in his lot with those
struggling against Apartheid. He defended the accused in the
1956-1961 Treason Trial and the 1963 Rivonia Trial.

The walk focuses on the architecture of the area including the
oldest mosque, the first house, the farmhouse and Schotcheskloof
Flats. From here we take a steep walk to the oldest graveyard in
Cape Town, the Tana Baru, where some of the founders of Islam in the
Cape are buried, followed by a traditional Cape Malay lunch. Wear
comfortable walking shoes.

IZIKO 8: WORKSHOP FOR SCHOOL LEARNERS
Interpreting Palaeo- environments from the Fossil Record by Dr
Deano Stynder (Curator/Scientist Cenozoic Fossil Collection)

This workshop will demonstrate how palaeontologists reconstruct
the palaeo-environment (ancient environment) from animal fossils.
Learners will be taken on a behind-the-scenes tour of the Cenozoic
Collections. In addition to a demonstration of modern animal
skeletons and original fossils from the Late Miocene/Early Pliocene
(5–4 million years ago), learners will have a lecture on various
palaeoenvironmental reconstruction methods. A practical session will
follow where learners will be given the opportunity to determine the
preferred environment of an animal based on its morphology. For this
exercise, modern skeletons will be used.
