What’s it all about?
Participants will have the opportunity to learn to make and write with a ‘qalam’, the traditional ‘reed’ pen used in Arabic calligraphy, and also have ‘hands-on’ fun activities with Geometry in Islamic Art. These exercises will be punctuated with brief talks around the History of Arabic Calligraphy and the History of certain Sciences in Islamic Learning. Also discuss the History of Timbuktu which used to be a flourishing Centre for Learning and Trade. The exhibitions of Timbuktu manuscripts, which we will be viewing at Iziko shortly, bear testimony to this. Written in beautiful Eastern and Western Arabic scripts, these manuscripts are documents of History, recording discussions on matters pertaining to Traditional Medicine, Astronomy, Islamic Law, Politics, Commercial transactions etc. Sacred scriptures were written in various Calligraphic styles, and certain passages were highlighted with Islamic illumination.
