June 16 Commemoration:  Youth Day / Youth Month at Iziko Museums of Cape Town

As a build-up to the celebration of Youth Day commemorating June 16, 1976, Iziko Museums of Cape Town will host an Inter-generational Dialogue that will feature one of South Africa’s political stalwarts, Ahmad Kathrada and the current UCT SRC president, Thulani Madinginye.

South Africa’s post-1994 society introduced a number of future prospects and challenges for the nation, particularly for young people. One of the challenges is the communication breakdown between an older generation of resistance activism and the present generation of young people. The recognition of community heroes and heroines is imperative in our collective heritage and has a role to play in bridging the generation gap. As a response to this need, Iziko hopes to contribute to the processes of social cohesion, national healing and reconciliation.

This exciting event forms part of youth month activities, in partnership with the National Department of Arts and Culture, the National Youth Commission and Artscape.

The event takes place in the I-SAM Whale Well at 12:00 PM on 12 June 2008.

Please join Iziko in keeping to our commitment to provide public education and promoting South African heritage by ensuring that these museum sites are platforms for socio-cultural transformation and lively engagement. We look forward to hosting you at this significant event.
