groundbreaking exhibitions about our living legend

Iziko Museums of Cape Town
celebrates International Mandela Day this Sunday, 18 July, by
welcoming visitors to the Iziko Slave Lodge for free from 10h00 until
17h00. On 11 November 2009, the sixty-fourth General Assembly plenary
and 42nd meeting of the United Nations declared 18 July as
International Mandela Day. This decision to honour the man whose
vision surpassed the boundaries of time and history, arrives as
nations of the world strive for peace and the sustained improvement of
human relations. Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela, as a living treasure,
embodies the qualities necessary to realise a harmonious world,
steered by tolerance.

2010: Making Connections

During this winter holidays Iziko Museums of Cape Town’s Education
and Public Programmes Department is offering a range of Let’s
Celebrate holiday programmes in celebration of our rich heritage
and our country’s momentous hosting of the FIFA World Cup. Special
programmes in the fields of Arts and Culture, Natural History and
Social History are taking place at schools in areas such as Nyanga,
Parkwood, Paarl, Hawston, Stanford, and at certain Iziko Museums.

Working together for youth development through action

“OUR NATION IN CONVERSATION: The role of youth in a changing
socio-political environment”. On 15 and 16 June, Iziko Museums and
Robben Island Museum’s Education and Public Programmes Department
commemorated the bravery of the youth of 1976 with youth activities to
promote social cohesion, nation building and reconciliation.
Activities ranged from special tours and workshops to an
inter-generational dialogue between youth and our senior citizens.

Iziko Museums of Cape Town celebrates the significance of
Youth Day this Wednesday, 16 June, by welcoming the public to
visit our national museums for free (excluding the Castle of
Good Hope and Iziko Planetarium). It is apt that South Africa
celebrates our youth’s significant and courageous contribution
to our democracy, as the world watches us host the most
momentous sporting event to ever be held on African soil.

Iziko celebrates International Museum Day 2010

On 18 May 2010 museums around the world will celebrate
International Museum Day. Museums wield the potential to
serve as platforms from which cultural exchange, awareness
and enrichment can be facilitated in order to promote
tolerance and understanding. Iziko Museums of Cape Town will
also celebrate this international event by granting visitors
free access to its sites (excluding the Castle of Good
Hope), as well as hosting a dynamic outreach programme on

elections of 1994. What better way to commemorate our nation’s
struggle for liberation and our eventual realisation of

pleased to announce that Ms Rooksana Omar has been appointed
as the Chief Executive Officer (Designate) for Iziko Museums.
Ms Omar holds an MBA and BA (Hons) degree and is currently the
Director of the Luthuli Museum, a National Cultural
Institution in KwaZulu Natal. In this capacity she has
provided leadership on both a strategic and operational level,
successfully delivering a relevant and dynamic programme
whilst ensuring strong governance, compliance and unqualified
