Listen, learn, look ... and ramble: Iziko’s Summer School programme  12/12/2008
There’s plenty of listening, learning and looking to do at Iziko’s upcoming Summer School programme which runs during February-March 2009. The packed programme includes a discussion on the role of museums (official opening), films on the theme of soccer, an illuminating lecture on the creator of the iconic Drum magazine, William Bloke Modisane, a symposium on the role of art, photography and the performing arts as a means of expression today, a dialogue on climate change and global crisis, talks on indigenous astronomy in southern Africa and a discussion on our cosmic origin and heritage. Iziko Museums has lined up a sizzling summer programme. Visitors to the different sites will be treated to a host of exhibitions, from Rock Art of the San to works by the acclaimed William Kentridge, and from the Old Dutch Masters to the world’s latest and most spectacular award-winning wildlife photographs. Make your own gift wrap and cards – in time for Christmas  03/12/2008
With Christmas around the corner, everyone’s thinking of gifts, cards and gift wrap! With this in mind, Iziko Museums have organised two papermaking workshops for December where participants will learn basic papermaking techniques using recycled materials. More >>

To mark International Day of the Disabled on 3 December, Sandra Eastwood, who has long helped unleash the artistic potential in those with various challenges, will facilitate a MAP (Meaningful Access Programme) Shared Insights workshop with teenagers of varied visual abilities. More >>

Emancipate yourself from... stigma and prejudice 27/11/2008
On 1 December 1834, many hundreds of men, women and children were emancipated from slavery in South Africa but still had to serve a four year apprenticeship with their owners, making their official date of freedom 1 December 1838 and 154 years later, in 1988, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared 1 December World Aids Day. It is upon this international declaration that, Iziko Museums of Cape Town will join the rest of the country and international community in commemorating World Aids and Emancipation Day. More >>

200 years ago, on 25 October 1808, the events of the first uprising by Cape slaves led by Louis of Mauritius who lived and worked in Strand Street, Cape Town, began unfolding. More >>

1808: The day Cape Town was turned Upside Down 16/10/2008
'1808: The day Cape Town was turned Upside Down’ is a collaborative initiative between the Rooster Collective and Iziko Museums of Cape Town. Produced to mark the bicentenary of the first slave uprising at the Cape of Good Hope, the piece creatively combines performance and audience participation to recount this historical episode in Cape history.

Kids and Cameras – An integral part of Month of Photography 10/10/2008
An important component of the Month of Photography event – and one that should not be overlooked - are the children’s photography exhibitions on view at the Iziko South African National Gallery Annexe until 1 November. All work on show is the result of children’s workshops initiated by Cape Africa Platform, Iziko Education and Public Programmes, MoP4, the Greyton Historical Association and ‘Word of Art’. More >>
