All education programmes have to be booked at least one month in advance. A special concessionary entrance fee per learner is charged for all booked sessions (excludes the Planetarium). We encourage teachers to contact us before visiting to ensure that learners get the most value out of an educational visit.

New National Curriculum-based lessons and tours are now available on the themes of Slavery, the Timbuktu manuscripts, Palaeontology and Visual Culture Studies. All guided tours must be booked in advance.

Guided Activity Sessions

Tours and activities usually last one hour but can be adapted to meet individual requirements. Visits to two or more sites can usually be accommodated. Groups per session are usually limited to 35 to 40 participants although, subject to staff availability, we can handle two groups simultaneously at most sites.

Teacher-led visits

Teachers are welcome to organise their own group visits to the museums. For information on current exhibitions go to the What's On page. Please inform our bookings office of your intended visit to ensure that there is room for your group in the galleries. Please note that teacher-led groups are charged the normal entrance fees.

Outreach

Iziko has a community outreach officer who visits schools to inform them of programmes, learning opportunities and resources available at our twelve museums. We also operate a mobile museum bus that presents modules on indigenous knowledge. The bus visits schools and community centres at no charge. To book follow the Bookings link or visit the Outreach page.

Training for teachers

Iziko takes every opportunity to assist educators to become skilled in using heritage resources for learning. For science teachers, we offer a two-week introductory course in taxidermy. This covers the basics in preparation of small animal specimens for the classroom. Art workshops for learners and educators are regularly offered at the SA National Gallery. New programmes are usually announced on this website, in the press or in our quarterly newsletter (to join the mailing list email your details to jsilberman@iziko.org.za).

World Teachers’ Day is marked with a programme for senior phase GET teachers in the Social and Natural Science and Arts & Culture learning areas. Themes include archaeology, slavery, human rights and palaeontology.

Volunteering Opportunities

The Iziko Education Department needs volunteers to run holiday events and staff the resource centres over weekends. If any part-time or retired teacher or person experienced in working with children is interested in volunteering, please email jsilberman@iziko.org.za.
