Music on the menu
Historical landmark, Iziko Koopmans-De Wet House in Strand

Interesting artist throws open
his studio door
Artist and videographer Dan Halter, winner of the 2001
Michaelis Painting Prize and currently a lecturer in videography
at Michaelis School of Fine Art, will open his Commercial Street
studio to guests on Saturday 26 May at 14:30.

Art in a time of repression - 3
new exhibs: 1. The legendary Rorke's Drift Art Centre
During the apartheid era, when art training was denied to black
artists, a fine arts training centre, Rorke's Drift in KwaZulu
Natal, was established to redress the injustice. Now, over 40
years since its opening, a selection of works from this vitally
important centre will be exhibited at Iziko SA National Gallery.

new exhibs: 2. Cyprian Mpho Shilakoe Revisited
"Cyprian Mpho Shilakoe Revisited" opens at Iziko SA National
Gallery on 15 May. Curated by Jill Addleson, formerly of the
Durban Art Gallery, the exhibition includes works on loan from
private and public collections in South Africa.

Imbacu - Art from the
inside/outside" opens 16 May at Iziko SA National Gallery.
Curator Loyiso Qanya states that the exhibition takes as its
point of departure the death of Steve Biko 30 years ago.

Revelations from Timbuktu
The topic of Timbuktu and the ancient manuscripts discovered at
this legendary and once-bustling city, come under the spotlight
at 19:00 on Tuesday 29 May when Friends of SA Museum host
well-known astronomer, Dr Thebe Medupe, in a talk entitled
"Astronomy in Timbuktu".

A great art find in 20th
century South African art history
By sheer coincidence, through an article published in the
Daily Sun, we discovered that the late Rorke's Drift artist,
Cyprian Shilakoe, had been survived by one brother and 4
sisters.
