Tour of
Memorial on Cape Flats, Wednesday 25 at 10:30
During October, Friends of
South African National Gallery will pay tribute to the
heroes of apartheid struggle when they host an outing to view
commemorative artworks on the Cape Flats.
On Wednesday 25 at 10:30, Friends and guests will visit three
public sculptures dedicated to those who died in the cause of
freedom. Commissioned by the City of Cape Town as part of its
Heritage and Memory programme, the sculptures include the
Guguletu Seven Memorial honouring young political activists who
died in 1986, the Trojan Horse Memorial and the memorial to two
young Umkonto weSizwe members killed in a limpet mine explosion
in Athlone.
City Council Project Manager, Basil Tommy, and Marilyn Martin,
Director of Iziko's Art Collections, both of whom served on the
public sculpture adjudication board, will accompany the tour.
Hosted by the Friends, the event is R40 and participants will
meet in the Gallery's car park in Hatfield Street.
