28/11/2006 New AIDS exhib features accomplished local artists

Embracing HIV/AIDS is a new exhibition which opens at Iziko SA National Gallery on 1 December and runs until January 2007.

Penny Siopis: Baby in Red (2002), cibachrome photographThe Gallery has a proud history of curating exhibitions and acquiring works of art dealing with HIV/Aids, going back to 1994. In the early days, and for many years to come, few SA artists engaged with the pandemic and our holdings increased slowly. This has changed dramatically as HIV/Aids has spread and touched more and more lives.

Recent exhibitions and research revealed the existence of a substantial body of new work and we successfully applied to the Dept of Arts & Culture for transformation funding to purchase specific works. Some of them will be seen in this exhibition that opens on International Aids Day. Artists include Kim Berman, David Goldblatt, Churchill Madikida, Berni Searle, Clive van den Berg, Diane Victor and Zapiro and works range from photography to sculpture, paintings and drawings. Works by David Goldblatt, Gideon Mendel, Penny Siopis and Hentie van der Merwe that were acquired previously are also included.

The exhibition will be a point of departure for education programmes and special walkabouts. Enq: Marilyn Martin +27 (0)21-467-4660 or e-mail mmartin@iziko.org.za.

The Gallery is open daily except Monday from 10:00 - 17:00.
