Summer School: Everything
under the African sun; book early
"Museums and heritage as cultural sites of engagement" is the
theme of Iziko's
Summer School programme which runs from 2-26 February 2007.
Topics
include "Museums and Democracy" by Dr Ciraj Rassool on 2nd;
human variation and skin colour" by Dr Wilmot James on 5th;
"Museum and heritage education" by Prof Crain Soudien on 6th;
Re-interpretation of Western Cape Archives by Nkhumbudzeni
Tshirado and Lorraine Khoury on 7th; Sunday Times heritage
project and their centenary celebrations by Sue Valentine on
8th; transformation of
Slave Lodge into an architectural gem by Prof Rob Shell on
12th; "Preserving Africa's indigenous manuscript heritage in
Timbuktu" by Mary Minicka and Alexio Motsi on 19th; "The making
of modern African literature" by Prof Harry Garuba on 22nd, and
"Cultural activism as strategy in re-imagining of heritage" by
Myer Taub on 24th.
For
those who prefer the great outdoors, there's a trip to
Sutherland, home of the Southern African Large Telescope with
Prof Brian Warner from 10th-11th; a trek to the top of Table
Mountain with seasoned hiker Cedric Hunter on 11th; a retreat to
the Cedarberg with scientist Roger Smith to study flora, fauna,
fossils and rock paintings from 15th-18th and on a lighter note,
a jaunt to Darling to meet the inimitable Tannie Evita on 18th.
Closer to home, Faried Bassier hosts his ever-popular morning of
rambles, raconteurs and a repast in the characterful Bo-Kaap
area on 24th.
Film buffs will enjoy a variety of screenings: "Bushman's
Secret" by Rehad Desai on 9th; "Papwa: Lost Dreams" on 16th and
"Showcase of SA Short Films" an award-winning selection, and
"The impact of documentary film in Southern Africa with regards
to HIV/AIDS Education", both on 23rd.
Also on the theme of aids, Marilyn Martin examines the role of
the visual arts in addressing the pandemic by focusing on
Iziko SA National Gallery's
current exhibition "Embracing
Aids" on 26th.
