20/02/2007 Clothes maketh not the man, but the artist

The Crucifixion by Apt ElderClothes may not maketh the man but fabric certainly plays a significant, if subtle, role in works of art. The articulation of drapery in painting," says Hayden Proud, curator of Iziko's Historical Paintings and Sculpture, "is certainly a major aspect of the history of art."

"Fabrications", an ongoing exhibition at Iziko SA National Gallery, examines the ways in which artists have creatively used painted or sculpted
approximations of fabric and costume in their work, revealing some surprising insights into social history as well as the artistic process.

Proud says of the accompanying image depicting Christ on the cross: "This detail from a German religious painting of the late Renaissance shows how Christ's loin cloth in the Crucifixion becomes a vehicle for the expression of spiritual power. It is typical of the complex and often weightless draperies that we associate with a style now referred to as Gothic."

A lavish portrayal of costume and dress, "Fabrications" runs until further notice and can be viewed daily, except Monday, from 10:00-17:00.
