Questions and Collections - 25
Mar new exhib
The
essence of an art museum is its collections. However,
constraints faced by curators today mean their situation is far
from picture-perfect.
"Why collect?" is a new exhibition
opening on 24 March at Iziko South African National Gallery
which examines the plight of museum collections and places
viewers firmly in the picture by addressing issues such as:
"Why do we collect art for the nation? Who benefits and how? Is
our national art museum a true focus of national pride? Is the
state aware of its national art museum's potential to be a
catalyst to promote good international relations and tourism?"
Whilst posing these questions, Hayden Proud, Iziko's curator of
Historical Collections of Painting and Sculpture, showcases a
selection of acquisitions acquired in 2005-2006 and honours
those mainstays of museums "Friends, supporters and selfless
benefactors who have helped to sustain a long-thwarted vision of
a National Gallery of which all South Africans can be justly
proud."
The exhibition runs until further notice. The Gallery is open
daily from 10:00-17:00 except Mondays.
