For the shark, publicity has a
sweet & sour side
Thanks to the media, the plight of the great white shark is
often in the spotlight. However, for this magnificent hunter of
the deep, the media is in fact a double-edged sword.
On Tuesday 27 March at 19:00 at
Iziko SA Museum, Alison Kock of Iziko's
Shark Research Centre
presents "Sensational' Sharks in which she discusses the many
threats to this marine giant. Although white sharks are a
protected species in South Africa, they are threatened
constantly by fishing, shark nets, suspected poaching, habitat
loss through prey depletion, pollution and, not least,
sensationalist press. Kock also highlights the importance of
research, education and public awareness.
Hosted by Friends of SA Museum,
the event is free for Friends, R20 for guests. Come early and
enjoy a glass of sherry.
Tickets are available at the door. Enq: 072-225-6893.
