Dancing with shadows - a meeting of talent and the triumph over adversity

Talent and the triumph over adversity will meet at the Iziko SA National Gallery at 17:30 on 24 and 26 April, inspiring audiences and promising them an evening to remember.

"Dancing with shadows" offers Capetonians the opportunity to experience an exciting and innovative dance event at this renowned venue. Images by well-known South African photographer Santu Mofokeng, whose exhibition "Invoice" is currently on show at the Gallery, form points of inspiration for dance theatre by members of the Remix Dance Company in performances developed by choreographer Jay Pather.

Pather comments:

Santu Mofokeng's photographs are far too rich and redolent with meaning to require anything else but themselves. However, the source and effect of these haunting images provide compelling points of inspiration and departure for dance theatre. This has resulted in choreography within which kinetic narratives run parallel to those presented by the images, with moments of intersection and convergence and moments of divergence.

The Iziko SA National Gallery and the Remix Dance Company have had a long and productive relationship, with Remix forming an integral part of the gallery's exploration of ways to extend meaningful access to works of art to visitors with a wide range of abilities, through a Special Needs Programme facilitated by Sandra Eastwood. A leading, integrated dance company in South Africa, Remix has pioneered dance theatre involving participants with and without physical disabilities from all backgrounds, establishing itself as a unique dance company in the arts and education landscape of southern Africa. The emphasis is firmly on theatre, not therapy, with all endeavours based on artistic integrity and professional excellence.

The performances will take place within the exhibition space of the Gallery and will be introduced by Santu Mofokeng, who will speak about his work. The event will last approximately an hour. Access is available for those using wheelchairs and a sign language interpreter will be present. Tickets cost R40 and can be obtained from Remix Dance Company or at the Gallery door from 16:30.
