The allure of Eastern & Western
Art
The allure of Eastern art will be in the spotlight at 17:30 on
Thursday 10 May when Friends
of SA National Gallery host an illustrated talk by respected
art historian Nasan Pather of the Michaelis School of Fine Art.
Entitled "The invention of tradition and 'Indian Art' from
Durban", the event takes place at
Iziko SA Museum and examines ways in which Durban artists
engage with Hindu, Buddhist and Islamic visual forms.
Entry is R40 for Friends; R50 guests.
A further interesting event hosted by Friends takes place at
10:30 on Saturday 12 May when Dr Lydia de Waal presents a
walkabout of the Paul du Toit Retrospective at the Sasol Art
Museum in Stellenbosch. Du Toit, who was trained by Jan Welz,
imbued his works with a mystical quality. He lived in Cape
Town, Paris and London, drawing upon these locations to express
"the physical and spiritual unity of the elements".
Entry is R40 for Friends; R55 guests, including hot drinks.
Enq for both events to Lizzie 021-467-4662/0 (Tue-Thu
10:00-14:00).
