of human rights, slavery

A series of free lunchtime films
will be held over the next fortnight at
Iziko SA Museum in Queen
Victoria Street. Based on the conflicting themes of human rights
and slavery, all screenings begin at 13:00. Advance booking is
not necessary.
Thursday 26 April: "Born into Struggle" (74 mins) by
filmmaker Rehad Desai who spent most of his early life in exile.
Examining his relationship with his estranged teenage son, Desai
recognises his own troubled relationship with his father,
struggle hero Barney Desai.
Monday 30th April: "The March" (30 mins) - original
footage taken during August 1963 when thousands of civil rights
marchers gathered in Washington DC to hear Martin Luther King's
evocative speech: "I have a dream". This is followed by "A
history of us" (30 mins) which depicts how the issue of
slavery provoked some of the bloodiest battles ever fought on US
soil.
Wednesday 2 May: "Lydia Williams" (30 mins) provides
insight into the daily lives of thousands of slaves who formed
the economic backbone of the Cape Colony. "A shadow of hope" (24
mins) by Makela L Pululu describes refugees living in South
Africa, their integration into local communities and how the
issues of discrimination and xenophobia are being addressed.
Thursday 3 May: "Sankofa", (120 mins): A full-length film
by Haile Gerima, based on the affirmation that we must go back
and reclaim our past so we can move forward and understand.
Friday 4 May: "America beyond the colour line" (55 mins)
- the politics of race and how far we have come.
