04/05/2007 Art in a time of repression - 3 new exhibs: 3. Imbacu - Artists who once lived in exile

Imbacu - Art from the inside/outside" opens 16 May at Iziko SA National Gallery. Curator Loyiso Qanya states that the exhibition takes as its point of departure the death of Steve Biko 30 years ago. The word "Imbacu" means exile in Xhosa since all the exhibition artists have at some time in their lives lived in exile, either within their own land or outside of it. Imbacu's artists, each of whom made a contribution toward transformation in South Africa, include those of the stature of Albert Adams, Dumile Feni, Thamsanqa Mnyele and Paul Stopforth.

An educational programme accompanies the exhibition which comprises 53 works in total, including sculptures, photographs and paintings.
