Deliverance - discussion on
Mountain Rescue
On Tuesday, 31 July at 19:00, you can come face-to-face with the
hazards of mountain rescue when Dr Rik de Decker presents a
discussion on this altruistic pursuit. Rik, a medical doctor who
"plays in the mountains" is often to be found in his favourite
habitat, not only playing, but "helping others who have gotten
themselves into trouble in the mountains".
Mountain rescue has matured over the
years and today offers a speedy and efficient service which is
rather too often in demand, averaging three rescues per week, or
almost 150 per annum. Rik, a member of various mountain clubs, will
examine the reasons for this demand, and how to cope with the
escalating challenges of mountain rescue. He also outlines the
history of mountain rescue and how its techniques have evolved over
time.
Hosted by Friends of the South African Museum, the event is free for
Friends; R20 for guests. Come early and enjoy a glass of sherry.
