02/08/2007 Sarah Baartman - Women's Day Icon

As part of Women’s Day celebrations, Iziko Museums will hold a special tribute to Sarah Baartman, “the Hottentot Venus”, at 17:30 on 8 August at the Iziko Slave Lodge.

Entitled “A tribute to Sarah Baartman: addressing the question of the human remains in Heritage Institutions”, the talk will be given by Dr Yvette Abrahams, a lecturer at UWC. Iziko Museums is one of the organisations spearheading the issue of repatriation of “unethically” collected human remains.

Sarah Baartman, a Griqua, was taken from the Cape to London in 1810. Here she suffered intense humiliation, being exhibited as an object of curiosity. Just six years later, aged 27, she died in Paris, destitute and homesick. It was to be many years before her remains, dissected and appropriated by various interested parties, were repatriated and afforded a dignified burial in the land of her birth.

For more information on the event, which includes refreshments, please contact Wandile Kasibe 021 481 3804 or 083 335 6461.
