07/08/2007 Life, death and rinderpest - SA's first vet

Dr Jotello Soga, who was born in the Cape Colony in 1865, was a rare individual in that not only was he the product of a Xhosa father, the renowned Reverend Tiyo Soga, and a Scottish mother, but he became the first born and bred South African to qualify as a veterinarian in Edinburgh.

On 28 August at 19:00 at the Iziko SA Museum, Jesse Lewis will discuss the difficult and dangerous calling of the man whose greatest challenge was rinderpest, a merciless killer of cattle and a pestilence with widespread ramifications. In his quest to conquer this scourge, Soga sacrificed much more than his health. Too ill to continue his work, he died on the farm Amalinda, at the age of 41 years.

“Dr Jotello Festiri Soga – the first South African veterinarian” is hosted by Friends of the SA Museum. Entry is free for Friends, R20 for guests. Enquiries: 072 225 6893
