September - a month of celebrating
our heritage at Iziko Museums
In celebration of Heritage
Month, Iziko Museums of Cape Town hosts a calendar of
stimulating events that promise to be as diverse as our country and
people. Included are exhibitions, launches, behind-the-scenes tours,
workshops and film screenings. Entrance to all Iziko sites will be
free on Heritage Day, 24 September.
Two new exhibitions open in September.
On 4 September, the exhibition of South African photographer,
Ernest Cole, opens at the SA
National Gallery. On 6 September ‘Making
Waves', featuring contemporary South African art works from
the SABC Art Collection, will open at the Castle of Good Hope.
On Saturday 8 September, the
Slave Route walking tour takes visitors on a slave walk trail,
incorporating a tour of the historical
Bo-Kaap.
Africa Banner Painting Workshops on
Saturday 8, 15 and 22 September at
Iziko South African National Gallery offer youth a creative
exploration of African symbolism and pattern-making.
A
talk by Steve Biko’s son,
Nkosinathi Biko, on 11 September from 12:00-13:00 at
Iziko South African Museum, kicks
off a celebration of the life of Steve Biko. Nkosinathi will discuss
the film ‘Beacon of Hope’ which follows his talk. The
programme continues at Iziko
Slave Lodge with film screenings, poetry performances and
‘open-mic’ sessions from 11 – 15 September.
In keeping with the national heritage
theme of ‘Celebrating South African Poetry’, Iziko hosts the launch
of the CD ‘Ansella van de Caab - the story of a Slave-woman’,
produced by Diana Ferrus. The event takes place at 18:30 for 19:00
on 25 September at the Iziko
Slave Lodge.
On 24 September, Iziko
Planetarium launches a new Xhosa show ’15 Billion BC’, a
mind-boggling exploration of our ancient universe.
On 25 and 26 September, Iziko’s
curators and scientists host a variety of specialist guided tours
for the public (to book email
awilliams@iziko.org.za).
In addition to these programmes, a
selection of locally produced short films will be screened as well
as productions by budding young filmmakers studying at City Varsity,
and there also will be free screenings of the films ‘Bushmen’s
Secret’ and ‘Hip Hop Revolution’.
