06/09/2007 Green and pleasant lands - Africa's peace parks

Peace will be the theme of the next Friends of the South African Museum talk to be held at the Iziko South African Museum on Tuesday, 25 September at 19:00. Maano Ramutsindela, Associate Professor of Environmental and Geographical Science at UCT will discuss ‘The emergence, spread and challenges of peace parks in Africa.’

Apart from nature conservation, the main purpose of peace parks is to facilitate socio-economic development. They also have a symbolic function as commemoration sites. Initially started on southern African soil, the idea of peace parks has ‘taken wings’ and spread to the rest of Africa.

Prof Ramutsindela will also discuss the new challenges faced by this green and globally friendly initiative.

Entry is free for Friends; R20 for guests. Come early and enjoy a glass of sherry with friends.
