A whole lot of heritage - Iziko
walkabouts
What better time than
Heritage
Month to become acquainted with our natural and cultural
heritage? Iziko Museums have organised a series of conducted tours
at their sites.
On
25 September at 10:00 at Iziko
South African Museum, curator of Colonial Archaeology, Sarah
Wurz, presents a tour of the imposing Rock Art Gallery that earned
architect Iain Low a commendation of merit from the Cape Institute
of Architecture. Described as an evocative space that invites
acknowledgement of the artistic heritage of the San people, the
exhibition has proved a wonderful drawcard to both local and
overseas visitors.
On
25 September at 14:00 at Iziko
South African National Gallery, Joe Dolby, Iziko’s Curator of
Prints and Drawings, takes visitors on a walkabout of the
exhibition, ‘Rorke’s Drift, a cultural legacy’. During the Apartheid
era, Rorke’s Drift was one of the most important training centres
for black artists who were otherwise afforded little opportunity to
develop or utilise their skills. Recent funding from the National
Lotteries Board has enabled Iziko to greatly augment its previously
limited collection of works from the centre.
On
26 September at 14:00 at Iziko
South African Museum, visitors can ‘go to sea’ with Natural
History Collections Manager, Derek Ohland, when he presents an
informative walkabout of the Museum’s marine mammal collections and
displays.
Each tour costs R20 per person.
Numbers are limited and early booking is essential. Contact
