Iziko Slave Lodge museum extended
hours
The
Iziko Slave Lodge museum,
in response to public demand, has extended its Saturday opening
hours. The museum, will be open from 10am to 5pm, Mondays to
Saturdays.
The Slave Lodge, on the corner
of Wale and Adderley Streets, is one of the oldest buildings in Cape
Town, the original structure having been built in 1679. It served as
‘home’ to more than 9000 slaves in total, over a period of 132
years.
The Slave Lodge is the only
museum in South Africa to comprehensively tell the story of slavery
in South Africa. Among its attractions are a Memory Centre with
slavery displays, a small video auditorium, and an ongoing programme
of temporary exhibitions that highlight aspects of slavery and human
rights.
