09/11/2007 New lease on life for the traditional 'Still Life'

On Wednesday, 28 November at 15:00, UCT’s Professor Michael Godby conducts an informative walkabout of the exciting new exhibition ‘Is there Still Life?’ at the Old Town House on Greenmarket Square.

The exhibition combines 17th-century still life paintings from Iziko’s European collections with a survey of South African still life works drawn from collections around the country. Although initially an imitation of European practice, specific South African trends in Still Life later emerged, and these include approaches which ‘Africanise’ this centuries-old genre. Now, says Michael Godby, “a new generation of young artists has appropriated the genre and reinvested the subject with powerful new social meanings.”

Hosted by Friends of the SA National Gallery, the event costs R30 for Friends; R40 for guests; and R20 for students.

The exhibition runs until 31 March 2008 and can be viewed Mondays to Fridays from 10:00–17:00 and Saturdays from 10:00–16:00. For information on the exhibition, call Hayden Proud 021 467 4660 or to book for the walkabout, call Lizzie 021 467 4662/0 (Tues-Thurs 10:00-14:00).
