Up, up and away - Iziko Planetarium holiday programme

What’s going on under the sea these holidays? Or should one rather ask, What’s up at Iziko Planetarium? The answer to both is “Magic Milo and the Astronaut”. Specially produced for the Christmas holiday season, this new Planetarium show tells the story of Magic Milo, a curious fish, and his starfish companion, Sammy, who undertake an amazing space odyssey – and learn some astonishing facts from a new-found friend.

The show is suitable for anyone who has ever wondered about the mystery of space, but is particularly suited to junior stargazers between 5 and 12 years. Opening 1 December, the show will run daily at 12:00 and 13:00 on weekdays and 12:00 on weekends. Entry is R6 for children and R10 for adults (children’s show only).

Especially for teens and adults, “Cape of Stars” has been written by veteran scriptwriter and astronomer, Prof Tony Fairall, who was inspired by the Cape’s rich astronomical heritage as well as its unique geographical feature, Table Mountain, with its own stellar constellation. Not only is our mountain known for its unique geology and flora, states Prof Fairall, “but within its shadows significant pioneering studies have shed light on the nature of the night sky above.”

Starting on 1 December, ‘Cape of Stars’ runs daily during school holidays at 14:00 on weekdays, 14:30 on weekends and Tuesday evenings – the ‘double feature’ night - at 20:00, followed by a sky talk.

The popular “Sky Tonight”, an in-depth look at the current night sky, will be in its regular 13:00 slot on weekends.

Note that the Planetarium is closed on Christmas Day and that there will be no 13:00 or 14:00 show on 24 and 31 December.

No booking is required. Enquiries: 021-481-3900.
