The art of sound and other
surprises on walkabouts
As part of their closing events for 2007, the Friends of the South
African National Gallery will host two walkabouts that should
definitely not be missed.On
6 December at 11:00, art lecturers Nasan Pather and Andrew Lamprecht
will take visitors on a tour of the Graduate Students Exhibition at
the Michaelis School of Fine Art. The exhibition, a display of
youthful talent and innovation, is held annually on UCT’s Hiddingh
Campus in Orange Street. Entry to the walkabout is R20 per person.
On 8 December at 14:30, James Webb,
Cape Town-based contemporary artist and pioneer of sound art in
South Africa, opens his studio doors to Friends and guests when he
presents a selection of unconventional projects. These include his
sound recording adventures in the Amazon jungle and the Namibian
desert, an installation at the 9th Lyon Biennale, and ‘September
First’, “a clandestine collaborative intervention involving the
kidnapping of over fifty of the city’s top creative talents.” The
studio is situated in the Old Hall, Gardens Presbyterian Church, in
Orange Street.
The event is R30 for Friends, R40
for guests and R20 for students.
