This season, everyone is looking for treasure and to cater for demand, Iziko’s Education Division have organised two further treasure hunts.

  • On Wednesday 9 and Friday 11 January, from 11:00-13:00, join the Iziko Team in the Amazing T-race Treasure Hunt across three of the museum sites situated in the Company Gardens. This will be a test of speed and knowledge as participants search for clues hidden in secret places. ‘Detours and Fast Forwards’ are part of the fun. Suitable for ages 8 years and older, and beginning at Iziko South African Museum, the event costs R20 per person.
  • On Tuesday 8 and 15 January, from 18:15-20:15, there will be a rerun of the Special Night-time Treasure Hunt when participants, armed with torches and a keen sense of adventure, search for clues amongst the numerous displays of the Iziko South African Museum. This ‘Night at the Museum’ is suitable for the whole family and costs R20 per person.

Ahead of the long-awaited Timbuktu exhibition which runs at the Castle of Good Hope during February 2008, are a series of workshops based on a range of artistic, centuries-old skills which are also great fun to learn. All workshops will be held at the Iziko South African National Gallery Annexe and are suitable for participants aged 10 years and older. Participants should bring along a light snack.

  • On Friday 4 January from 10:00-14:00, there will be an introduction to the ancient art of mosaic-making and participants will create their own ‘Timbuktu’ mosaic tile. The event costs R40 per person, including materials.
  • On Thursday 10 January, from 10:00-14:00, participants will make beautifully articulated Mali-style puppets. They will construct and decorate a puppet and make it ‘come alive’ with its own personality and performance. The cost is R30 per person including materials.
  • On Friday 11 January from 10:00-16:30, participants will learn how to make manuscripts using colours and designs of their own creation. This workshop, which uses recycled material, forms part of an environmentally-friendly recycling project, and costs R20 per person including materials.

In addition to these events, Iziko’s Education Division are also offering Slavery Walking Trails on request.
