A walk around Musina

On 30 March at 11:00, the Friends of the South African National Gallery host a walkabout of the new exhibition, Messina/Musina, by Pieter Hugo, the Standard Bank Young Artist for Visual Art 2007.

Hugo, who spent a two-year residency period in Italy, has held numerous solo exhibitions in Cape Town and Europe.

The town of Musina in South Africa provides a host of captivating subjects for this award-winning photographer. Situated near Zimbabwe in the heart of the bushveld, it has attracted a conglomeration of disparate people, from mine and farmworkers to policemen, smugglers, illegal immigrants and prostitutes. The images ‘reflect on the wounds and scars of race, class and nationality’ that persist in the face of transition.

The title refers to both its former name ‘Messina’, a colonial corruption, and its present name, derived from the Musina people who lived there.

The event costs R30 for Friends, R40 for guests and R20 for students.

The exhibition runs at Iziko South African National Gallery from 22 March – 4 May 2008.
