28/03/2008 Ancient crafts at Iziko - practical and enjoyable

Following a successful series of workshops, the Education and Public Programmes Department of Iziko Museums of Cape Town will once again host a programme of events for educators and learners, providing participants with a range of creative skills that are both practical and enjoyable.

Educators should also note that the popular museum treasure hunts, which see entrants scouting for hidden clues across three museum sites in the Company’s Garden, will be offered to groups of learners (8 years and older) during school terms, and upon request. The cost of the treasure hunt is R20 per person and these run from 11:00-13:00. To book, contact Power at 021 481 3823 or email lmvimbi@iziko.org.za.

Below is the full programme of events:

On 2 May from 14:30-16:00, and 3rd May from 10:00-13:00, at Iziko South African Museum, participants will learn the art of paper making and how to colour and embellish their creations using recycled material. Entry is R35 per person.

On 10 May from 10:00-16:30 at Iziko South African Museum, participants will learn to master Arabic calligraphy, writing with a ‘qalam’ or traditional ‘reed’ pen, and will also investigate ‘Geometry in Islamic Art’. Participants will learn the history of Arabic Calligraphy, Science and Islamic Learning, and the history of Timbuktu. Entry is R80 per person.

On 16 May from 14:00-16:30 and on 17 May from 10:00-13:00 at Iziko South African Museum, participants will follow the ancient technique of mosaic making and will create a beautiful ‘Timbuktu’ tile. FET learners are encouraged to attend. Entry is R40 per person.

On 23 May from 14:00-16:30, and 24 May from 10:00-13:00, at the Iziko South African National Gallery Annexe, participants will make a recycled kinetic puppet, inspired by the beautiful Mali puppets. This is ideal for use in school lessons, particularly special needs classes. Entry is R40 per person.

On 31 May from 10:00-14:00 at the Castle of Good Hope, participants will use a variety of household and recyclable objects to construct a drum. Entry is R100 per person.

To book any of the above programmes, contact Power at 021 481 3823 or email lmvimbi@iziko.org.za.

Iziko’s Education Department also offers free public tours of ongoing exhibitions at the Iziko South African National Gallery, from Tuesday to Fridays at 11:00 and 13:00. Enquiries to Kathy or Ayesha at 021 467 4669.
