23/04/2008 Free entry on Freedom Day

Cape Town, 23 April 2008 – Iziko Museums of Cape Town (Iziko) marks the fourteenth anniversary of the birth of democracy in South Africa with free entrance at its museums on 27 April 2008.

The free day is part of the Museums' efforts to improve access to the unique combination of South Africa’s heritage collections that are housed at our eleven museum sites. Recently, we implemented free entrance for all children under the age of sixteen years. We have also retained the subsidised concessionary fee of R5 for South African pensioners and South African students.

In addition, we have selected several other commemorative days for special promotions. Henceforth, entrance is free for all on the following days as well: international museum day (18 May), Africa Day (25 May), Youth Day (16 June), National Women’s Day (9 August), Heritage Week 2008 (22 – 28 September), National Aids Awareness Day (1 December) and Human Rights Day (from 2009).

These promotions do not apply to the William Fehr Collection, Iziko’s museum at the Castle of Good Hope, or to the Planetarium shows at the South African Museum.
