08/05/2008 Bobbin lacemaking at Groot Constantia for International Museum Day

The nimble-fingered ladies of the Cape Lacemaking Guild will be adding a delicate touch to the celebration of International Museum Day. On 17 and 18 May, from 10:00 until 15:00 at Groot Constantia Estate, they will be giving demonstrations of bobbin lacemaking and will also display an assortment of decorative, yet practical hand-crafted items such as wedding veils, tea-cloths, brooches, fridge magnets and bookmarks.

Bobbin lacemaking dates back to the 15th century but is alive and well thanks to its many practitioners and fans. Visitors to the event are invited to not only watch these craftspeople at work, but to also try their hand at this ancient but ever-popular craft.

Contact Wieke at Tel. 082 593 4497 for details of the event.
