19/05/2008 Armchair tour of the Roman Empire

On 12 June at 18:30 for 19:00 at Iziko South African Museum, Dr Tim Rideout will take audiences on an armchair tour of ‘The grandeur that was Rome’. Superb builders and architects, unquestioned masters of public grandeur, the Romans nevertheless saw their entire ‘dolce vita’ collapse in less than a hundred years.

Dr Rideout examines all aspects of this golden era, from the provincial life in Pompeii to the great trading centre of Palmyra, the imperial villas of Capri and Tivoli, and the magnificence of Rome itself. Markets, theatres, public baths, race courses, libraries, artworks and complex infrastructures were some of the amenities enjoyed by one of the greatest powers of its time.

Hosted by the Friends of the South African Museum and the South African Archaeology Society, the illustrated talk is free for Friends of both societies and R20 for guests.
