23/05/2008 Free entrance to Iziko Museums on Africa Day

This Sunday, Africa Day, entrance is free to all at the following Iziko museums: the South African Museum, South African National Gallery, Groot Constantia and the Iziko Maritime Centre.

Africa Day is the annual commemoration of the founding of the Organisation of African Unity (OAU) on 25 May 1963. It is a significant symbol of the commitment by the leaders of the newly independent countries at that time, to fostering African unity.

In July 2002 the OAU was replaced by the African Union, which retained the date, name and objectives of Africa Day.

Africa Day is intended to be a day on which to celebrate progress and development in Africa, and to strengthen the development of common ideals. The headquarters of the African Union in Adis Ababa, Ethiopia, hosts a special commemorative ceremony on Sunday under the theme ‘Meeting the Millennium Development Goals on Water and Sanitation’.

Zambia, Zimbabwe and Namibia are among the countries that mark Africa Day as a public holiday.
