03/06/2008 Coffee and recollections with Joe Wolpe

On Wednesday 25 June at 13:00, the Friends of South African National Gallery host a walkabout of the exhibition ‘When Cape Art was Coffee with Joe’ currently running at the South African Jewish Museum in Hatfield Street, Cape Town.

The exhibition pays tribute to the life and work of Joe Wolpe, a warm and influential personality whose artistic career began in his father’s framing workshop in Lelie Street. He subsequently became a gallerist, a dealer in local and international art and a prominent artist in his own right. For over five decades, he played a powerful role in the promotion of contemporary and local art.

As the exhibition title suggests, one of Joe’s endearing practices was to offer an ‘intimate coffee for any visitor’.

The walkabout is led by Joe, together with Estelle and Joe Jacobs.

Entrance to the event is R75 for members; R100 for guests (which includes entrance to the Jewish Museum and the inevitable ‘cuppa’ after the walkabout).

Numbers are limited and early booking is advised. Enquiries: Lizzie 021 467 4662/0 (Tue-Thu 10:00-14:00).
