09/06/2008 Amazing holiday - treasure hunts, taxidermy, puppets, mosaics & wire art

From 30 June until 17 July, Iziko Museums are offering a range of creative events to ensure that children, parents – and even teachers – are kept happy and busy during the July holidays. Amazing Treasure Hunts: 1, 8 & 15 July from 18:15–20:30, all ages. Meet at the entrance to the South African Museum for Iziko’s very own ‘night at the museum’. By popular demand, these amazing treasure hunts are back! Armed with torches, keen minds and a sense of adventure, contestants will seek hidden treasure amidst the Museums’ fascinating displays. The fee is R25.

Taxidermy Workshop: 30 June– 4 July at Iziko South African Museum suitable for participants aged 15 years and older . Aimed at those who may be considering taxidermy as a career, the 5-day workshop teaches the basic skills and diverse applications of this complex art. Participants will learn to prepare and mount skeletons of small mammals or birds and how to preserve specimens in alcohol. The fee is R100. Times on enquiry.

Mosaic Workshop: 8 July from 09:00–14:00 at Iziko South African National Gallery Annexe; suitable for participants aged 9 years and older; younger children welcome if accompanied by an adult. Beautiful and functional, mosaic tiles have been popular for centuries. Learn this ancient art and create your own ‘Timbuktu’ tile. The fee is R50.

Wire Car Workshop: 9 July from 09:30–13:30 at Iziko South African Museum, suitable for participants aged 14 years and older. Wire art items are currently all the rage in South Africa. Now participants have the opportunity to create their very own wire car. The fee is R60.

Puppet-making Workshop: 10 July from 09:00–14:00 at Iziko South African National Gallery Annexe; suitable for participants aged 9 years and older, younger children welcome if accompanied by an adult. Learn to make an enchanting Malian puppet using recycled material. Highly recommended for educators, especially those whose learners have special needs, the workshop will show how puppets can bring an extra dimension to lessons, whilst providing an effective teaching tool for teachers. The fee is R50.

Teachers’ Workshop: 17 July from 14:00–16:30 at Iziko Slave Lodge Lecture Theatre. Aimed at teachers, this activity marks the Bicentenary of the Slave Rebellion of 1808. Slave resistance will be discussed and a resource pack will be on sale. Entry is R30.

In addition to the holiday programme, Iziko’s Education Department offer Slavery Walking Trails on request, a Winter Public Programme of lectures, outings, workshops, symposia and film screenings (watch the press for details) and free public tours of various Iziko sites, including art tours of the Iziko South African National Gallery.
